The idea of putting on a masquerade mask and morphing into someone no one knows is a fantasy that stems back to 11th Century Italy and the original Carnival, “Il Carnevale di Venezia,” as it was called. The act of putting on a Venetian mask and a masquerade costume was a tradition of the upper class so that they could mingle with others without their identity being disclosed. Especially around those of their own class who also wore masks to disguise their doings and to form powerful alliances or adversary amongst each other. Today, we use masks in so many ways. A famous use of masquerade masks in the US is for Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras masks are particular to the event that is mainly celebrated in New Orleans. The Mardi Gras costumes usually compliments the Venetian masks used at Mardi Gras. You can also use costume masks for special themed Gala events, weddings, Halloween, a masquerade ball, medieval ball, and costume ball. Some people prefer using masquerade masks as a fetish in the bedroom, but I will leave your imagination up to that.
When purchasing masquerade masks you need to keep some things in mind regarding the type of mask you will be wearing to the event:
1. What type of event is it? Is it a masquerade ball, a black tie event, Halloween party, a masked ball, Mardi Gras, etc?
If the event is luxurious and upscale, you should consider investing in a hand painted Venetian masquerade mask. The attention to the mask’s detail is bar none with Venetian masks. You may also want to consider a feather mask as it adds drama to any outfit. Although many feathered masquerade masks are made for women, they also have leather masks with small feather details for men. For men the experience may be more feminizing then expected, but he may like it. These works of art are also a worthwhile investment as you can hang your Venetian mask on the wall to remind you of the fabulous time you had while wearing your carnival mask.
If the event is lower key and relaxed, then I would consider using Paper Mache masks, drama masks, or plastic masquerade masks. This way you can still have the dramatic appeal that a more expensive masks would have, but within budget. Many party stores carry this type of masks for masquerades. Just be sure to wear complimentary clothes to your mask. You do not want your mask to clash with your overall look or costume. Also if you loose your mask it won’t be as tragic as loosing and Italian made masquerade ball mask.
2. Where was the mask made?
If you are not worried about the quality of your masks, then I wouldn’t be too concerned about the mask’s country of origin.
However, if you need a quality made mask or you are a masquerade mask aficionado, then you should buy Italian made masks only. This is where Venetian masks began, so just think of the years of experience the Italians have in mask making. The quality of Italian made masks is top of the line.
3. Probably the most important question is who do you want to be with your mask or what character do you want to play with your mask?
This is where all the fun comes with masquerade masks. Let your imagination run wild in this area. Do want to be subtle and use leather masks, or do you want a great feathered mask with its plumage displayed in all its glory?
Do you prefer theatrical masks with a stagnant expression? Then maybe try the classic drama mask. Greek masks make a good strong statement as well if you want drama. The many moods a mask can take on are quite powerful in the Greek style masks. Renaissance masks and harlequin masks also emit a strong image for the mask wearer. Each “category” of masquerade masks tells it’s own story and comes from some tradition.
