There are many different types of masquerade masks out there, and many people, even ones who have attended a masquerade ball, are still in the dark about the true origins of masquerade masks and venetian masks.
In this article, I will give a brief background of the history of venetian masquerade masks, and a quick overview of the different types of venetian masks that are out there, so you can make an informed decision when it is time to choose your own!
Venetian masquerade masks get their namesake from the fact that they originated in Italy, specifically Venice, around the 11th century. They were worn to the Carnevale celebration that still takes place in many places around the world, and is the father of the Mardi Gras celebration in the United States.
Venetian masks were worn by all different types of people, but were more favored by the upper classes, who wore the masks with their capes and other disguises to mingle amongst each other in anonymity, and in some cases so that men and women could experiment sexually without the fear of being recognized.

Venetian masquerade masks are made from several materials, such as leather, paper mache, and plaster. They are normally hand painted and are also sometimes made with fabric trims, jewels and other materials. Venetian masks are normally made in several traditional shapes that date back to the origins of Carnevale. Some of the most notable styles are the Bauta style and the classical long nose style of masks.
Venetian masquerade masks are very beautiful, so much so that some people have made a hobby out of collecting them. Do your research and make sure that your mask is made from a comfortable material that does not weigh too much, as sometime the larger styles can be heavy. You will be sure to find a venetian mask that looks great and that you will love!
